Classes and Clubs?

Posted by sunnywilliams on January 24, 2007

As we begin to get ready for the 2007 – 2008 school year, I would love to know your thoughts on ideas for different elective classes and clubs that we might want to include in our course offerings. Remember, this isn’t the place to make comments about current courses or teachers, but a chance to brainstorm different options for the future.

  1.   Pat Hodge Says:

This is wonderful! I know of no other school that allows students to blog the principal about which electives they want for the coming year. This is a valuable learning tool for all of us.

  2.   Suzanne Freeman Says:

It is so informative to read what Dr. Williams is posting about HTMS and then to read students’ comments. We are truly living in the 21st Century and Dr. Williams is leading the way!

  3.   Cameron Marlin Says:

I think we should have a class that we could have free time to talk or do homework instead of study hall were you can not talk.

  4.   Bubba Loftus Says:

I think we should all be able to have study hall but we should also be able to talk in that class.

  5.   Chris Dunn Says:

I think we should have a class were we get to learn about Marine Biolgy. I know it is a elective next year but I still think it would be nice to do earlier or even spanish to offer another language to us.

  6.   David Tourtellotte Says:

I think that Cameron’s idea is pretty cool, but, as an elective, I think we should have a Woodshop class because I think that would be fun to learn how to build stuff out of wood.

  7.   Bailey Chandler Says:

I think we should add more classes teaching diffrent languages. I now we have latin ,but I think we should have a couple more. Like: French, Spanish or Italin.

  8.   Hunter Johnson Says:

I think we should have an elective class where everone can just hang out and talk. We should just have a free period because we have been working hard in class and we deserve a break.GO HUSKIES!!!!!

  9.   Daniesha Carr Says:

Well I think a good class/club would be a hip-hop team/club. I know we already have a dance team, but everyone doesn’t like that type of dancing, and we should have classes for people who dance differently. It would be fun to go to the football games and basketball games and see more than the regular band, cheerleaders, and dance team.

  10.   Alan King Says:

I think we should have a movie making class. We would so happy if we could have that class. We should have a photography class also. These classes would teach about all kinds ways to make movies and pictures great. People could write scrips and even whole movies.THese classes would be great.

  11.   Morgan Simmons Says:

I think that we need a class to help people with their homework this would bring up grade and we would not have as many zeros. It would be like study hall but we could talk.

  12.   JoJo Thompson Says:

I agree with Cameron. We should have a place to sleep with no one disturbing us that would be great.

  13.   Charles Cash Says:

I think a class that allows us students to attempt to start and maybe complete class projects would be a good idea. It will give us a chance to get it done quicker and at school than at home where there are a lot of distractions like T.V, Video Games, or the Computer.

  14.   Robert Isbell Says:

There should be a photography classes. There are some people that really like taking photos. A lot of girls do and I think that taking a photography class is something that would be new and exciting for everyone to enjoy. Taking photos of landscapes, areas of the world, or just pictures of friends. They just love to take pictures. It’s a way of expressing someone’s self.

  15.   Aleesha White Says:

I think that the classes that we have right now at HTMS are great but there are others I feel that could also be of benefit to us. One would be a film making class because it would be really interesting to learn how movies are made; it would also be a class that woud be a olt of fun to make. We could do documentaries on our school, write scripts and film short movies, and also learn about famous directors. Another class I thought would be interesing to take would be photography. We could take pictures around the school, and learn about lighting, angles, etc. I know a lot of kids right now have cameras and love to take pictures, but don’t know haw to work their camera to get the best shot(like me). These classes will be able to expand our creativity and will be fun and interesting.

  17.   Sammy Christopoulos Says:

Hey Dr.Williams I would really like a club about Roman and Greek Myths. Mythotholgy helps the world tremendously by helping us have imagination of how the Ancient Greeks and Romans thought our world was created.

  18.   Connor Acton Says:

I think a class we should have is srength building. We had last year but we never really worked out. This time if it is used they should work out three times a week and run two days a week. I also think we need to have a class just to talk or sleep in. Because we need a break after taking an exam or something like that.

  19.   Josh Martin Says:

I think a good elective would be drafting or computer programming i’m just saying that because those are two thing I love. Plus it would be a great thing to learn ata an early age.

  20.   Michael McClinton Says:

I think every child should have a study hall because of football, baseball, cheerleading, ect. for students won’t have to rush thrue there work late at night when they get home.

  21.   Grey Cranford Says:

Hey Dr. Williams, I would like to have clubs or classes that help us learn about what type of career we would like to have in the future, mayby about the business world and politics, mayby about greek mythology, mayby a bible study, or mayby even a class or club about directing or filming home made movies.

  22.   Abby Vinson Says:

How about a club that goes on weekend trips to rivers and lakes to test how good or bad the water life is? We could learn so much more than just how fish and plants live in their ecosystems. If the water isn’t clean we could complain to whatever the source is…teenagers are good at this stuff. Students could test the water or clean up or just have a clean up day around the Cahaba. We could hook up with the Cahaba River Society.

  23.   Kasey Tuggle Says:

I wish the girls could have had athletics this year. I play basketball and softball so I am always up late doing homework. I do not think it is fair that the boys who play sports get athletics and the girls do not. P.E. is great for people who do not do their own activity but I do not understand why the boys do not have to have P.E. and get to go to athletics when the girls who play a sport do not. On game day I need a study hall to do my homework, but instead I have to be in P.E. when I am going to leave straight from school to go play basketball or softball.

I know that in high school the girls will have athletics. This blog is for the younger girls that will be in HTMS who play sports, and probally would like to get their homework done or do their sport like the boys do in athletics.

Thank you for taking time to read my blog,

    Kasey Tuggle

  24.   Nichole C. Says:

I would like to have a photography class because a lot of people like to take pictures and edit them .

  25.   Meredith Hunter Says:

I think it would be cool if we had a class where we could have a snack or something. A lot of classes eat lunch really early, around 10:15.

  26.   Abby M. Says:

We have a great variety here at HTMS. I think a photography class. I love to take pictures and maybe someone could come and teach us how to take pictures better. Having a photography class would help out the newspaper and yearbook with pictures.

  27.   Zackery Eades Says:

I think we should have spanish instead of Latin.I didnt even sign up when i heard that it might be Latin. It would be better if we learned spanish because spanish is a more common used 2nd language than Latin. That would help all of the students with getting a job.

  28.   Cole Corcoran Says:

We should have a period that we can go to what ever class we want like if someone was doing bad in a class they could go another period and ask more questions and get more help. And those of us who don’t need help can hang out have a drink and a snack and just talk and have fun for one period.

  29.   Maggie Meacham Says:

I think that a study hall is a good idea. Last year lunch study helped me to finish my homework.

  30.   Dylan Rigg Says:

I think that we should have a study hall and weight training class for next year. We should have a study hall so that kids can do hamework or just talk and have a free peroid.

  31.   Zac Adams Says:

I wish we could have different languages, like Spanish, German, or Italian.

  32.   Ben McCormick Says:

I think that we should have more than just Latin taught at our school. We should have Spanish, German, or anything else. We should all have a study hall class too. That would give us more time to do our homework. This would make our school better.

  33.   Kelly Birdwell Says:

I think we should do what cole corcoran says about having a period that we have a break and to relax, and talk about how are other classes were. I also think that we students could bring in like cd players, i-pods, psps, etc.

  34.   Dylan Rigg Says:

I think that we should have a study hall and weight training class for next year. We should have a study hall so that kids can do homework or just talk and have a free peroid.

  35.   Danielle Dodson Says:

I agree with the other requests for a movie making class. That would be a very interesting, fun elective.
It would teach us about technology, and it would help us if we wanted to have our own little movie project.

  36.   Emily Says:

I would love to have a class of Fashion and Design. I think it would be great! It would probably be an all girls class but it would be a ton of fun. I think it a very good idea.

  37.   Erin Says:

I think we should have a club for photography and fashion desinging.

  38.   Kirby W. Says:

I think the idea of a fashion design class is so awesome. I love fashion and it seems like it would be a whole lot of fun.

  39.   Kate N. Says:

I think that we should have a photography class.
Becausse i think it would be a great chance to improving our picture taking skills. Also i think that it would be so much fun!
Also study hall is another class i would love to have.
Because I do dance and i get home late from practice so it would be good if i already had all my homework done when i get home! I would want it 7th period the most! So i know what all I have more for homework!

  40.   Amy Walker Says:

I think that we should have a free period or class. This free time would give students time to get help with their studies or whatever they need help on. When I had a study hall last year, I already had my homework done that night, but it game me time to get help on anything that I needed clarification on. Study hall also gave me time to just relax and read.

  41.   Adam Russell Says:

I think that we should have a Yoga Ed. class. I have read about this and its supposed to help calm people before a big test. It also helps people to not get in trouble because it calms you down with deep breathing in difficult forms. This class has been derived of all of its hindu terms so anyones background religion can do it. It could also be used as some sort of detention so that whoever is in trouble can calm down a little bit.

  42.   sunnywilliams Says:

I LOVE some of your ideas. I spoke to the director of technology yesterday morning about the possiblity of having classes for video making and digital photography. He was very interested in helping us makte that happen. We even talked about starting a club for technology after school. Do you think we would have interest in it?

  43.   Haley Says:

I think a good class/club would be a babysitting class. Now as we teeenagers get older,we have to learn how to raise money for ourselves, and since most teens try to baby sit, this would be a great class. Instructions on what to do when a kid gets bored or when it gets sick, or how to make them calm down, etc. I think it would be a great class/club because it would be interesting, and educational.

  44.   Kaitlyne B. Says:

I think we should do like a differant langauge kind of thing like letting us take Spanish or some other langauge.

  45.   Kaitlyne B. Says:

I think we should do like a differant langauge kind of thing like letting us take Spanish or some other langauge other than only Latin.

  46.   Autumn Says:

We have many clubs in HTMS, if you make a new elective or club you want to support the idea. The football team, cheerleading squad, B-ball team, and dance team all get alot of attention. You want a club to be well known and treasured to other students. You also want to make sure you keep “labels” away from the club, things such as: “Band Geek” or “Snobs” Everyone needs to step up to what they want to do, without a down side.
    -Autumn

  47.   Maya Says:

I would love to have a to have spanish classes in HTMS.I would to learn a different language at school, so I could come home and say something spanish to my mom and she wouldn’t knoe what I meant.

  48.   kevin Says:

I think we all should have study hall so we can get all our homework done without having to worry about not doing it or bringing the wrong books home or the lazy people like me could do there homework without geting detenchion.

  49.   Lauren Says:

    I totally agree with ERIN!!!!

  50.   Pareasa Says:

    Dr Williams,
I just wanted to know why 6th graders cant have electives like the 7th and 8th grade.

  51.   sunnywilliams Says:

Pareasa, this is a great question. In Alambama, sixth graders are required to take reading which is a course that 7th and 8th graders do not have to take. The extra course fills up the period where electives could take place. Let me know if you need more clarification.
    Dr. Williams

  52.   Amanda Says:

I’ve read a lot of great ideas about electives… many mentioned having other foreign languages such as Spanish, French, and even Italian- but has anyone thought about Sign Language? Would anyone be interested in that?

  53.   sunnywilliams Says:

We would love sign language, but we need someone with the appropriate certificate from the American Sign Language Association.

  54.   Nick K. Says:

I think we need to have a class where you would get to do what ever we want to. We could do our homework or ever talk if we wanted to.

  55.   Sara Says:

I think the 8th graders should be able to get their study hall back. Last year it was a great chance for a lot of people to catch up on things like make-up work & to get ahead on homework. Right now a lot of 8th grade girls are in the middle of tryouts for colorguard at the highschool, & our team is starting a research paper for english & a project in science. Next week, a lot of us will have tryouts for highstepper. Last year with a study hall, this week would be a lot less hectic.

  56.   crystal lambert Says:

I think it would be terrific if the school had a photography club where kids with this interest could meet and share/critique each other’s work. Area phoographers may love to speak at some of the meetings and give hints and tips. Kids (who may not be into athletics) still have so much talent to share with the community and each other, but no outlet. Does the school host any kind of art/photography show for the kids to display ,tell about and even sell their work to the public ? That would be a fantasic way to build self cofidence and show the kids the appreciation they deserve.

  57.   Piper Says:

I think having a photography Club is a fablulos Idea!
I would be one of the students to be in it for sure. There is not really any kind of photography club for kids in Trussville and I think it is a wounderfull idea. I learned to love photography about 2 or 3 years ago. Ever scince then I have not been able to find a club or a class were a can share my passion woth people with common interest! I think a photgraphy club would be a great idea. Some schools alow students to start school clubs is it that way here?

  58.   shanequa thurman Says:

We should have poerty and drama and a step team the reason why we should have these class because i think that they are funny . Not only that for examples poerty and drama might help someone that is going through some problem in there life and that might be the only way that they can tell you how they feel .There life problems that they might be going though and might trying to ask you to ask them for help .
