An Amazing Day at HTMS

Posted by sunnywilliams on January 26, 2007

Amazing things went on at HTMS today!  The 8th grade science students were spread out over campus discovering things about velocity and speed.  Some were out on the mall shooting rockets made from soft drink bottles.  Others were in the halls building roller coasters.  Mrs. Hambey’s students dissected squids—man does that smell bring back memories of my days in science class.  Mr. Brown’s class participated in a simulation designed to help students learn the workings of the ancient city-states in Greece.  I loved watching each individual “city state” go from claiming all of the land possible alone to forming alliances with other city- states.  We took pictures of the 8th grade students voted as this year’s who’s who for the yearbook.  The focus of this year’s who’s who was the character education words we study throughout the year.

Mr. Jones, Mr. Posey, and I are still hard at work with homework remediation.  We appreciate the teachers’ continued efforts to work with students who are not performing as well as we would like.  Unfortunately, there are still too many students not completing work on time, but we are working to help students make better decisions.  We have moved into the next phase of homework remediation.  Students who have been referred before for not having homework automatically go to detention.   Eventually, students will grow tired of sitting in the cafeteria on the hard round seats for two hours after school.  Remember, the media center is open every morning for students who need extra time or extra help to complete homework.  We are here to help each student be successful!

Maybe students have a hard time getting it done and it might be difficult to work on. They might need to find a time to talk to the teacher so she can explain how to do it again to make sure you know. Maybe work some problems out for him or her.

  2.   Jonathan Kramer Says:

    We need less homework.

  3.   JoJo Thompson Says:

I under stand the homework remadtion is good to help kid that dont care about school. they will have to do there homeowrk. When we come to school so early we are tired because of doing so much homework if we did not have so much homeowrk we wont be so tired because we could go to sleep early.

  4.   Jonathan Kramer Says:

We need less homework in every class. Need to stop giving so much math homework everyday.

  5.   Daniesha Carr Says:

I don’t think homework remediation is a good idea, although I know you took a deep thought about how to get the work done and you thought it was a good idea. Just sit and think about if you have H.R. you might not even get credit for it in some classes and it will still be a zero on your grade. When some teachers give out H.R. you have to do 10x the work so whats the point? There are other ways to get it done than H.R..

  6.   Jonathan Kramer Says:

We need less homework. Need not to give math everyday.

  7.   David Tourtellotte Says:

I think Homework Remediation is a great idea for our students and our school system’s reputation. If we have better grades then more people would want to join our school.

  8.   Danielle B. Says:

I like the idea of homework remediation because now I don’t get in trouble at home about a zero on my work. I can do the work, get some credit for it and not have a zero.

  9.   Cameron Marlin Says:

I do not think we should have a homework remediation because the people that dont do their homework should just get a 0 and get held back or fail instead of getting half cretit. I think the teachers should just make them sit out of the activity when we do something fun.

  10.   Carlos Bozeman Says:

I completely disagree with the idea to start homework remediation. It just takes up more of the principal’s, teacher’s, and student’s time. In the end, we pay the price for not doing our homework.

  11.   Emily Moore Says:

I’m glad that you started the homework remediation rule because so many people are not doing their homework. It getting to be really annoying especially when we have a whole weekend to do it. They’re still going to have to finish it sometime. So, they might as well do it when they’re told. I think your new rule will help some kids to just realize that there is no point in putting themselves in detention when they are still going to have to do the homework anyways.
Also, I was one of the students shooting bootle rockets and I’m glad we got to do them. I like being able to have a little fun sometimes while we learn. It’s nice to get out of the classroom and get some fresh air.

  12.   Grant P. Says:

I’m really glad that you give the students at Hewitt Middle School a second chance to finish their homework. They don’t understand how nice you are to give them some more time to finish the homework that they didn’t do. You really are the best Pricipal in the world!

  13.   GriffinAsh Says:

I disagree highly of this, people should get a zero and fall on their face and learn from failing.

  14.   Zack Lee Says:

I have to agree with Carl about the homeword remediation. I love it that the teachers care enough to take their time to give us half credit, but if students don’t care enough about their work, then let them pay the price.

  15.   Park Says:

I think that what they are doing is cool. I hope to learn that next year.

  16.   J.P. Morrison Says:

I think that homework remediation should be done for people who just don’t care about the school and their grades. But, i think we need less homework becuase we have a lot to do everyday for the people who play sports. But, in the end we do need homework remediation. It helps the people who don’t do their work get some credit and might help them not fail. To all the students who are reading i think they are trying to help us.

  17.   Cole Dillon Says:

I don’t agree with the idea of homework remediation. The students that never do their homework aren’t going to start now. In fact, since they are obviously defiant, they are just going to challenge you, by still not doing their homework.

  18.   Brittany E. Says:

I understnad that homework helps the students to do there work and to learn more indepth about the subject, but sometimes we have so much homework that we cant finisg it all with that we also have after school activitys that we have to do such as baseball, soccer and more but i think that sometime we are just so tired that we dont feel like doin homework. But i do thinkt hat we need homewrok to help us but just not so much that it takes all afternoon

  19.   Alex Johnson Says:

I think that homework remediation is good. I mean if you dont do that night’s homework you are going to have to do it anyway in detention. This will teach kids who dont care anything about school to do their homework.

  20.   Kinsey Waylander Says:

I think that homework remediation is a good thing because it gets students to do their homework. Teachers assign homework so that the students can learn more about the topic that they are studying. If students choose not to do the homework they should be punished other than their grades. Hopefully, homework remediation will get all the students to do their homework!

  21.   Anna Dailey Says:

I think that homework remediation may be a good idea for students who never do there homework, because eventually they may learn to start doing their work. I do not think it is fair though, to give detention to kids who have already had homework remediation, because they might be students who always do their homeowrk, but mabye once or twice have not had time. I think that detention should only be given to kids who are without their homework on a regular bases.

  22.   Elisa Says:

Yes i agree we do have often days of amazement in the 8th grade. My teacher tells us we are learning a lot more than he did when he was a kid. I think that we have a lot of great teachers that make school fun by doing neat things.

  23.   Brittney M. Says:

I believe that homework remediation is good, but also bad. I belive that it is bad because teacher’s have more work and kids who have it don’t care or they would have done it the first time. I believe that it is good for those few people who do care and are only in there once because they ran out of time or were in a hurry.

  24.   JC Says:

I do not agree with homework remediation AT ALL!
There is no JOB REMEDIATION! What are we teaching? That if you don’t do your job you should get another chance to do it for half pay?
Middle school should be the first stage in preparing kids to be adults and that is the hardest lesson to learn, but the most necessary…if you don’t do your work…you suffer the consequence. You have taken away the most basic consequences that these kids face. FAILURE is NOT a bad thing! Let them experience failure now while they still have a safe environment to learn from it. When you fail in the real world, there are MUCH harsher consequences. It is NOT a good environment for them to experience failure for the first time.

  25.   hj Says:

I agree with Zack Lee about the homework remediation. The students should care about their education enough to do their homework and if they decide that they dont want to do it than they will pay the price!!!

  26.   anna Says:

My most memorable grade was in 3rd grade. I would go around and say that my sister was dating like 7 guys. Of course, I didn’t know what that meant. I got friend and boyfriend confused. She did have one boyfriend at the time. I also didn’t know that a little boy’s mom was a teacher of y sister. He overheard me tell one of my friends and told his mom who told my sister. She came home one day and was laughing at me. I had no idea why. She said that a little boy asked her what having 7 boyfriends was like. She had asked him were he heard that she had 7 boyfriends. He told her that I said it. So after she told me about my mistake, at school, the boy said that she said “Yeah, it’s awesome!!!” He told me that my sister was so cool. I never told him that she was lying.
