Community Math Night

Earlier this week, I was privileged to attend the Greater Birmingham Math Partnership Community Math Night. The leader of the session stressed the importance of math skills and lead the more than 200 people in a variety of exercises that provided practice of multiplication facts without the pain of drill that many of us experienced. It made me wish that I had such experiences as a student.
My memory of learning multiplication aren’t all that nice. I don’t remember why father and I were in the car so much during my third grade year, but I remember him calling out problem after problem until I cried because I had had enough. What are your memories of learning your multiplication facts?

I thought that the community math night was great. I normaly do not like math that much, but that made it really fun. I learned a lot in the time that we where there. I liked that method.

Kailey, I really enjoyed the community math night too. I especially liked how we were taught to look for patterns when solving problems. The paper clip game was pretty cool too.

I was going to go, but my dad nor mom was up to it. They were tired, and didn’t have the strength to take me. It probably would have been fun though.

Some of the memories that I had had a lot to do with races. We had races to see who could answer multiplcation facts the fastest in the third grade.our teacher would flash a card and we had boys against girls and we would race to get the correct answer faster. It was always fun doing math that way.

I remember in about 3rd or 4th grade, we got a big list of multiplication problems that we had to memorize for a test. My mom would take the list and call out random problems from it to help me study. She did that about two or three times a week. I didn’t like it at all because I thought I could get by without knowing them. Good thing, though, because I haven’t forgotten them to this day.

Starting off learning multiplication was exciting and fun. My third grade teacher set a goal for our class to recieve a banana spilt after learning our multiplication table. Every day we would learn a new set one day the 1’s, 2’s,3’s and so on and the following day you would take a quiz on them. You had to take and finish the set in one minute and pass it. If you did then you would earn part of the banana split.(banana, ice cream, cherry, etc.)Having a set goal to achieve and a tasty reward for achieving that goal really encouraged me to practice and learn my multiplication.
